About Remember the Joy!
Remember the Joy! was founded by Lydia Byhardt Bollinger,
MSW, LCSW in West Linn in 2005. I am delighted to focus my
life work on supporting families to return to the joy they always
knew was possible in their lives.
Professional Background
I was a teacher for many years. I taught Spanish to pre-school and
elementary aged children in the United States, English to high
school students in Japan, and English to middle school students as
a Peace Corps volunteer in Sri Lanka.
I decided to work more closely with children and families, so I
completed my Master’s in Social Work (MSW) focusing on
working with children and families. I earned certificates in both
Marriage and Family Therapy and Trauma Counseling. I have
continued my education studying child development, attachment
and adoption issues, the circle of security, parenting skills, grief
and loss, and Dr. Dan Siegel's interpersonal neurobiology.
I became a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in 2003. I have
worked with children ages 3-17 in schools, outpatient settings, and
day treatment programs.
I am fluent in Spanish, and have been teaching parenting classes
and stress management seminars (Transformations: from Stress to
Wellness) for over 4 years.
As an early childhood mental health consultant I became certified
as a Parent Group Leader in The Incredible Years research-based
programs, which promote kids' social competence and reduce
behavior problems. Many of the behavioral skills I teach are based
in this model. For more information on this research, see www.

Guiding Philosophy:
My business is called “Remember the Joy” because my goal is to
support families to remember the joy that brought them to become
a family in the first place, despite the difficulties they may be
having now. I focus on strengths and concrete solutions for
everyday issues.
I believe strongly in supporting children to understand transition,
using their communication style of fewer words and more art,
puppets, and role play.
For fun and joyful relaxation, I offer tHairapy – Hair Braiding for
special occasions and ordinary days. I have played music for 30
years, and perform with Joyful Sounds, a Celtic music duet of
harp and flute.
About Lydia
I grew up in Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin.
I love animals, art, music and dancing, and I love to integrate
creative activities into counseling. I have traveled to over 20
countries for work and pleasure, and I enjoy studying foreign
language and culture. As an adoptive mom, I am always learning
more about attachment and culture.
Art allows children to
express their thoughts.
Puppets help connect with
kids and teach social skills.
